Mailing List Web Sites

A bunch of Web sites let you subscribe to or even create your own mailing lists, for free.

Free Sites

Many Web sites offer to manage mailing lists for free. Most survive on the proceeds from advertisements either appended to the text of messages distributed to the mailing lists, or displayed on the Web site. Some Web-based list servers include:

  • Cool List (http://www.coollist.com) The Cool List web site hasn't been updated since 1997, so we wonder how active they are. To get off of a Cool List list, visit http://remove.coollist.com or write to unsubscribe@coollist.com. If you receive unsolicited e-mail via Cool List, report the perpetrator to nospam@coollist.com.

  • eGroups (http://www.egroups.com): In addition to mailing lists, eGroups lets your group share files, have online voice chats, and share a group calendar. To get off an eGroups list, send a message to listname-unsubscribe@egroups.com where listname is the name of the list.

  • Listbot (http://www.listbot.com): ListBot belongs to Microsoft, and is labeled with its "MSN" brand. To get off a ListBot list, send a message to listname-unsubscribe@listbot.com, replacing listname with the exact name of the list. ListBot doesn't provide an address for reporting spam (get with it, Microsoft!).

  • ONElist (http://www.onelist.com): ONElist merged with eGroups, but it still exists under its own name. Liek eGroups, list subscribers can also share calendars and files with each other. To get off a ONElist list, send a message to listname-unsubscribe@onelist.com, replacing listname with the name of the list. If you receive spam via ONElist, report it to abuse@onelist.com.

  • Topica (http://www.topica.com): Topica includes the Liszt mailing list database for searching for a list by topic. If you manage a list using Topica, you can join the owneradvisors@topica.com mailing list. To report problems with a list, write to support@get.topica.com

Fee-Based Mailing List Web Sites

Many Web sites allow you to create mailing lists for a fee. In return, they don't display any ads or append ads to the mailing list postings. Many ISPs let you create mailing lists if you have an Internet account. Vivan Neou maintains a list of sites that provide mailing list services, at http://www.catalog.com/vivian/mailing-list-providers.html. List-Business.com has a page with mailing list providers, too, at http://list-business.com/list-service-providers/.
